Cassie Koscianski shares her rewarding experiences as an ESL teaching volunteer.

Three years ago, I decided to get involved in the local community through volunteering. Helping Link/Một Dấu Nối offered a meaningful way for me to meet new people and build connections. My experience has been filled with heartwarming moments and inspiring stories. I’ve witnessed the determination of our scholars as they master a new language and the joy that lights up their faces when they successfully communicate in English.

Recently, I had the pleasure of interviewing several of my students to learn more about their stories and the impact Helping Link/Một Dấu Nối has had on their lives. We enjoyed catching up and reminiscing about the wonderful moments we shared in class. Our conversations highlighted the transformative power of the services Helping Link/Một Dấu Nối provides.

A common thread in all the scholars’ stories was the desire to improve their English skills to better navigate life in the U.S. and overcome language barriers. They emphasized that the English classes significantly boosted their confidence in speaking and helped expand their vocabulary, both essential for effectively communicating with their coworkers and clients in their jobs. Our scholars also mentioned they gained valuable technology skills, such as using smartphones and apps. The support they received in class was crucial for daily communication and achieving significant milestones, like passing the U.S. citizenship test. The twice-weekly classes provided a sense of community and connection, and many noted how they made new friends, which was so great to hear!

As a teacher at Helping Link/Một Dấu Nối, I see firsthand how these stories emphasize Helping Link/Một Dấu Nối’s crucial role in bridging gaps, fostering community and empowering individuals. I’m thrilled about Helping Link/Một Dấu Nối’s next chapter with the new site opening in Renton. This will be a

fantastic opportunity for us to continue building community and a sense of belonging.
